8.1 Metric Makeover - Transforming Your Measurement Mindset (I)

Clinical Resource Management

Everyone knows that carpenters live by the idiom "Measure Twice-Cut Once" but we often underestimate the value of metrics in cost saving initiatives. Calculating the savings on price changes is easy but practice change or savings based on utilization present unique challenges. Just measuring spend between various time periods does not incorporate the variances in patient volume and acuity necessary to calculate accurate savings or cost. This presentation will allow participants to utilize metrics in a variety of opportunities to validate cost savings. Actual data from various hospitals will be used to demonstrate the truth behind calculating cost savings. Participants will be provided with detailed information that will help them develop metrics for specific projects in their facilities.

Laura Wood, Ph.D., RN, MSN, CRCST, President & CEO, Expense Management Experts, Louisville, KY

8.3 Sustainability Saves Money (B)

Many health care organizations have made environmental or sustainability commitments and are looking for ways to implement their commitments without spending more money. This presentation will explain the resources available to material managers and purchasers to use the procurement process to implement sustainability goals and tie environmental sustainability to the bottom line, including resources from Practice Greenhealth and government resources. Participants will learn how to evaluate supplier environmental claims and what environmental attributes to ask about when evaluating products. Boulder Community Hospital will present real-world examples of sustainability, including recycled-content products, packaging, alternative energy, and other topics from a variety of departments. Developing a culture of sustainability can be a key to successful implementation of an environmental program.

8.4 Transitioning Military Logistics to Supply Chain (I)

Professional Development

This presentation will focus on an untapped resource for our profession... military medical logisticians. It will also review the types of training military logisticians receive throughout their career. Lastly, the presentation will discuss how the experience and training gained from military service can be transferred to the private sector and how the merging of the two can benefit our profession. This presentation is not only for military logisticians, but for organizations looking to understand these tried and true professionals and what they can bring to an organization.

8.5 Stop the Leak: Find Savings in Facilities Spend! (I)

Purchasing

The dollars spent on supplies and services to maintain and improve hospital facilities (buildings, grounds, etc.) are typically not easy to manage. Many facilities utilize a wide variety of (often local) vendors, with little planning or negotiating in the acquisition process. The easy solution of running out and using a petty cash or a procurement card leaves little opportunity to negotiate with vendors and get best pricing on these supplies and services. Learn how one hospital was successful in plugging the facilities spend drain. This program will give you the tools to make a difference in this difficult spend category. If you have problems managing items like maintenance contractors, plumbing and electrical supplies, filters, and others, you need to attend this session!

Caroline Kolman , Director, Wellspring Partners, McMurray, PA

Jeanine Defeo , Director of Purchasing, Unity Health System, Rochester, NY

The session will include an overview of the capitation strategy and vendor contracting process implemented as well as highlight how Banner established a collaborative framework with physicians to initiate and maintain the All-Play contracts. This will also include insights into how to address concerns from the vendors, so they will want to participate.
