Session I: Supply Chain Excellence: What are the Key Drivers?
8:15 am – 9:15 am • Strategic Planning
This session will outline a collaborative study conducted to identify the characteristics of top performing organizations and the proven strategies and tactics that would be beneficial for all organizations in improving organizational supply expenditures. A unique supply chain performance metric was devised to rank all UHC organizations, and interviews were completed to identify the key differentiators in supply chain performance. The project was overseen by a task force composed of academic medical center leaders to provide critical input and review the methodology, performance measures, interview guides, final report, and other key aspects of the study.

Session II: PPI Standardization – Is This the Right Strategy?
9:15 am – 10:15 am • Finance
It is a well known fact that if you buy in volume or you commit a percentage of your purchases to a vendor, pricing of a product typically goes down. This works well for most industries but not in hospitals. Materials managers must not only satisfy the administrative leadership team by controlling costs but also an eclectic group of physicians who typically gravitate to the latest and greatest trend or technology. This session will help you understand the physician temperament, determine which way the wind is blowing, comprehend the pros/cons of standardization, especially from a physician perspective, and shape a contracting strategy for your own climate.

Session V: An Overview of Supply Chain Best Practices
1:45 pm – 3:00 pm • Strategic Planning
In 2005, Intermountain Healthcare looked for a supply chain executive outside of the industry who could apply rigorous applications in managing the over $1 billion non-labor spend of the company. A new Vice President was hired and given significant freedom to organize a world class supply chain organization, but with it came the
mandate to save $20 million per year. In this session, learn what a world-class healthcare supply chain organization looks like and what their major initiatives are. You will come away with the motivation to look beyond the normal and will have new industry insights and a list of best practices that you can apply in your supply chain strategies when you return to your own institution.
Brent Johnson
Vice President, Supply Chain, CPO, Intermountain Healthcare
Salt Lake City, UT
3:15 pm – 4:30 pm • Finance
Most hospitals agree – Value Analysis (VA) can be an effective tool for achieving supply chain savings without sacrificing clinical performance, even though debate remains over how to structure a VA program and whether the effort required is commensurate with the results. This session will show how to develop a VA program that works as well as determine if it is truly achieving the intended results. Assembling the right team, establishing clear, actionable clinical and financial objectives, and ensuring access to accurate data for reporting and analysis, your VA team can effectively model “what if” scenarios to calculate the potential benefits BEFORE taking action. Once initiatives are underway, you can monitor whether changes are being implemented as intended as well as measure and report on the actual results. The session will put these proven principles to work to optimize your contract compliance, standardization, and new product clinical trials and analysis for savings you can count on.
