Surgery Inventory Management & Reduction Strategies
Overview: This presentation offers real-life examples of surgery inventory management and reduction strategies that resulted in a $1.5 million surgery inventory reduction in six months. Presenters will describe a project they implemented at the request of the director of the surgery department who in March called for a $500,000 inventory reduction by the end of the year. Participants will learn details about strategies used to complete this successful initiative that include setting organization’s PAR levels, managing rep items, developing protocols for new product requests, providing continuous staff education, establishing a surgery value analysis team and physician support, and buy-in. The organizations’ future inventory reduction goals will be discussed.

Biographies
Jennifer Deschenes is a Certified Surgical Technologist at Southeast Missouri Hospital. For eight years, she held the position of lead Neuro Surgical Technologist and also assisted with supply chain management. In 2009, she accepted the position of Inventory/Implant Coordinator. Jennifer is currently pursuing a degree in nursing and expects to graduate October 2011. Her education and experience have given her immeasurable understanding of the OR and areas in need of improvement. In addition, through her hard work, she has earned staff and physician support which has enabled her to succeed in this role.
Nancy Mueller came to SoutheastHEALTH in 2006 following 15+ years of operating room nurse experience, both in a hospital setting and in an ambulatory surgery center where she served as Director of Nursing and Interim Administrator. As the Central Sterile/OR Materials Manager of SoutheastHEALTH, Nancy directs and coordinates the activities of 30 staff members and serves as the chairperson of the Surgery Value Analysis and Financial Performance Committee. Nancy has an Associates of Arts degree in Nursing, Bachelor of Science degree in Education and is a recent MBA graduate of William Woods University with a healthcare emphasis. She is a member of AORN, IAHCSMM, and AHRMM. Her certifications include Ambulatory Surgery Administrator Certification, CNOR, and CRCST.
Jeanie Rhodes began her healthcare career in the Obstetrics unit at Southeast Missouri Hospital. She obtained a bachelors degree in Psychology and Management from Southeast Missouri State University. She worked at MedAssets as a cost analyst and returned to Southeast Missouri Hospital as the Perioperative Materials Management Coordinator in 2007. Jeanie came to this position and was able to institute order and trust where none had previously existed. Over the past four years Jeanie has implemented the Kan-Ban system, helped to enforce PAR levels, and has earned the respect and trust of her co-workers, peers, sales representatives, and administrators.
