Preventing Fraud and Theft in the OR
Overview: The presenter will utilize a case study of an actual fraudulent scheme uncovered at his organization involving the misrepresentation of reusable instruments as disposable, single use items by a large multibillion dollar manufacturer of orthopedic implants. Further investigation of the charges brought forth by a “whistleblower”, ex-representative of the company, revealed that not only was the company billing for these reusable devices, the sales rep was actually stealing the new bits and stockpiling them for his own benefit. The details of this scam will be discussed along with methods for detecting fraud and theft in the OR. Recommendations for strengthening policies and procedures regarding “bill only” purchase orders and sales representative access will also be discussed.
