AHRMM Names Georgetown University
Healthcare Leadership Institute Scholarship Winners
CHICAGO, June 15, 2001 - The Association for Healthcare Resource & Materials Management (AHRMM) today announced the recipients of the 2001 Georgetown University Healthcare Leadership Institute Scholarship supported through a grant by Kimberly-Clark Corporation and AHRMM. The recipients are Anna Rouwhorst, director of materials management, and Barbara Collet, director of OR/perianesthesia care unit/sterile processing, from Shriners Hospital for Children at Galveston Hospital, Galveston, Texas.
The AHRMM Education Committee selected this team to receive the scholarship based on their work to reduce operating room (OR) turnover time, which will in turn reduce staff stress, staff overtime, and continued overtime costs.
A multi-disciplinary team consisting of members from Shriners' OR, materials management, environmental, anesthesia, performance staff, and medical staff were assembled to identify areas for improvement. The group was charged to find new ways of processing the workload to alleviate the delays between cases to handle the increasing volume of cases. Data collection analysis revealed four key improvement areas: setup time for surgical procedures, environmental services, surgical consent delays, and frequent OR schedule changes.
The scholarship was designed to promote collaboration between resource and materials management professionals and perioperative nursing executives and has been made possible through funding from Kimberly-Clark Corporation and AHRMM. The scholarship covers tuition and all travel expenses to a week-long conference on the campus of Georgetown University in Washington, D.C. at the Schools of Business and Nursing of Georgetown University. Highlights of the program include:
- Strategic Management Skills
- Financial Challenges in Modern Healthcare Organizations
- Managerial Communication in the Age of Technology
- Ethical and Legal Issues in an Economically Constrained Environment
- Labor and Employment Issues in the 21st Century Workforce
- Preview of Key Health Policy Initiatives in the New Administration
In addition, participants will spend a morning on Capitol Hill, being briefed by key legislative staffers on current health policy issues. This program has been awarded Continuing Education Units (CEUs) from the Maryland Nurses' Association.
The scholarship recipients will be honored at the Recognition Breakfast on July 31, 2001 during AHRMM's Annual Conference & Exhibition in Denver.
