Haiti Relief Effort
The January 12 earthquake in Haiti caused incredible devastation, affecting the lives of more than three million people.
In response to overwhelming offers of relief support and assistance for vicitms, AHRMM is encouraging those offering help to utilize the following resources:
-
U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID)
This site allows users to search through the needs of various organizations and register your offer of assistance.
-
One5 Foundation
The One5 Foundation is continuing its mission of revitalizing communities by directing its energies at the relief effort in Haiti. The site includes a Medical Supply Needs list, as well as information on donating money and volunteering.
-
U.S. Transportation Command (USTRANSCOM)
USTRANSCOM provides transportation for U.S. government relief efforts throughout the world. Visitors searching for logistical support in transporting relief goods can view USTRANSCOM's transportation options guide.
Additionally, AHRMM member William McKay, Executive Director of Supply Chain Management of the UHealth System at the University of Miami, is working to supply a 200-bed hospital at Toussaint Louverture International Airport in Port-au-Prince. McKay and staff at Miami's Miller School of Medicine have sent thousands of dollars in supplies to support a clinical ground force of more than 100 doctors, nurses and support staff, but more help is needed.
Specifically, McKay is in urgent need of 500 external fixators (for legs, arms and ankles) to treat the current backlog of patients at the field hospital. Those not in possession of fixators are asked to contact their company or other hospitals to inquire whether any are available for donation. If a sufficient number of fixators cannot be located through donations, McKay is willing to purchase them.
