Description

The health care supply chain is integral to delivering high-quality care while advancing environmental and public health outcomes. The Medical Equipment Proactive Alliance (MEPA) spearheaded the development of a comprehensive set of Sustainability Criteria for Purchasing Medical Imaging Equipment, addressing the environmental and social impacts of health care procurement that can directly influence population health. This initiative is a global, multi-stakeholder collaboration that unites healthcare providers, manufacturers, non-profits, policymakers, and industry experts to create actionable, science-based guidelines.

Recognizing healthcare’s contribution to 4.4% of global emissions, with medical devices comprising a notable portion, MEPA brought together diverse voices to harmonize sustainability standards. The Sustainability Criteria encompass lifecycle assessments, climate mitigation, resource utilization, chemical safety, and social responsibility, enabling organizations to align procurement practices with environmental goals while maintaining excellence in patient care.

This session will highlight the inclusive approach MEPA employed to foster stakeholder engagement, overcome barriers, and achieve consensus on these sustainability standards. Attendees will gain actionable insights into integrating these criteria into procurement processes, building resilient partnerships, and leveraging sustainability to drive value and impact in healthcare supply chains. Lessons learned from this initiative will provide a roadmap for implementing collaborative sustainability efforts that advance both care delivery and health equity across diverse care settings.
